Organic Eye Maintenance – A User’s Guide
We all want our eyes to look good and function well. But is there anything we can do to care for them without resorting to a cocktail of drugs and chemical creams?
The answer is an emphatic yes. When it comes to looking after our eyes naturally, we should try to remember – and adopt – the following, three-pronged approach:
1. Exercise and rest, don’t strain
2. Eat the right foods
3. Use an organic eye cream and organic makeup
Let’s look at each segment of this approach in a little more detail:
Exercise and Rest, Don’t Strain – For our eyes to function properly, we need to use them as they were intended. Which means, for most of us, that we need to reconsider how we use our computers and even the television. The problem with staring at a screen for too long is that it can cause eye strain. This can lead, in turn, to dry eyes, headaches and even neck, back and shoulder pain.
Our eyes need variety and they need to be exercised properly. If you are sitting at your desk and staring at your computer screen for extended periods, then try to remember the importance of the 20/20 rule, which involves giving your eyes a break every 20 minutes. Rest them by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds, then go back to your work.
Every two hours or so, it also pays to stand and move away from your desk. Give your eyes a break and stand near a window filled with natural light, or head outside for 5 minutes. As you walk, make a conscious effort to exercise your eyes by focusing on objects that are near to you, then objects that are far away.
Remember though, that if you are outside in the sunlight for extended periods, then it’s important to wear UV protective glasses with polarized lenses. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can harm your eyesight and has been linked to conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
Eat the Right Foods – There are a number of nutrients and minerals that are important for eye health and which we can get by eating the right foods.
For example, lutein and zeaxanthin can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. These nutrients can be found in green vegetables (and especially kale and spinach), as well as eggs and oranges.
Vitamin C is similarly important for our eyes. Grapefruit juice can be a good choice here, although vegetables like broccoli, green and red peppers and leafy greens are a better bet if you are looking to minimize your sugar intake (try to eat organic if you can, to minimise exposure to chemical pesticides!).
Other nutrients for our eyes include Vitamin E, which we can get from sunflower seeds and almonds, and essential fatty acids, which can be found in fish or walnuts.
Zinc, which is present in cashews, shellfish and red meat, is also important, whilst the beta-caratone found in carrots really does help to strengthen our night vision!
Use an Organic Eye Cream and Organic Makeup – It makes little sense to care for the proper functioning of our eyes and then pickle the skin around them with the types of synthetic chemicals found in most eye creams.
The answer is to use a high quality organic eye cream and organic makeup instead. There are a number of decent options on the market, but when it comes to an eye cream, River Veda’s organic Revival Eye Cream is amongst the very best. There are a host of premium organic ingredients in this cream, including rose attar oil, which not only helps to replenish the skin, but is also effective in treating broken capillaries, wrinkles and stressed skin.
A number of powerful supercritical extracts are also used in the cream, including lotus flower, which has skin softening properties as well as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, whilst an extract of the renowned ayurvedic herb, shatavari, helps to balance the skin around the eyes and protect it against constantly changing environmental conditions.
In a similar vein, The Organic Skin Co. has an amazing range of natural eye makeup to choose from, including on-trend eye shadows and eye liners, and a popular mascara. There are no chemical nasties in these products, only nourishing, natural ingredients which will care for your eyes and leaving them looking good.
So there you have it! Think natural, think healthy, and give your eyes the break they deserve.
